"Must haves" for moving to Europe with pets

Important information below:

  • Your pets can travel two ways to the EU – commercially and non-commercially.
  • Your pet must travel as manifested cargo, which means that he/she will be travelling as a registered, special cargo shipment and not as part of your luggage allowance.
  • Your pet must be vaccinated against rabies, they must be no younger than 12 weeks old at the time of vaccination and must also have their microchip implanted or scanned prior to the vaccination. 21 days must pass before your pet can travel.
  • (Dogs only) Within the 5 days prior to travel (but no less than 24 hours) dogs must be treated for tapeworms (Echinococcus Multilocularis). The product used must be licensed with Praziquantel. Only required for travel into Finland, Republic of Ireland, Norway, or Malta.

  • Pets travelling commercially must arrive at a “Border Control Post” in the EU. On arrival at the BCP they will undergo a health check by the government vet.
  • They must travel on a DEFRA commercial health certificate – signed by an OV vet within 48 hours prior to departure (Pets on the Move will apply for this on your behalf).

  • You or someone on your behalf must travel within 5 days of your pet – A copy of the airline travel ticket will be required to support this
  • Your pet must arrive at an approved “Travellers Point of Entry” in the EU.
  • They must travel on a DEFRA non-commercial certificate – signed by an OV vet within 10 days of departure (your chosen OV vet will have access to this via the APHA vet portal). This certificate can then be used for onward travel around the EU and re-entry into the UK for 4 months
